William Marc Charles II

William Marcus Charles II (Marc) is the author of the non-fiction Simplified Self-Defense for Women published by the Marine Corps Association. Marc has also been published twice in the Marine Corps Gazette, the professional magazine of the United States Marine Corps, and once in the Ensign, a global monthly of the LDS Church. He has written six historical novels: A Samurai Comes of Age, The Kirishitan Problem, The New Shogun (all part of the Death Among Brothers Trilogy-Japan 1632 through 1634); and The Fixer (Judea 34 AD), The Kush (Egypt and Sudan 35 AD), and Gun Hawks (Missouri River Valley 1881). Marc was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and spent his formative years in Warren, Michigan. He graduated from Boot Camp in San Diego at nineteen and for the next twenty-four years wore the eagle, globe, and anchor proudly until retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel of Marines. Marc has been an infantry rifle company executive and commanding officer; company commander in a recruit training regiment; commanding officer of the marine detachment USS Midway; commanding officer of Company C, Marine Security Guard Battalion; war planner―US Naval Forces Central Command (Middle East); and executive officer Marine Barracks Pearl Harbor. He is a graduate of the US Army Psychological Warfare Course, the US Army Infantry School and the Marine Corps Command and Staff College.

 He graduated with honors from Park College with a BS in Management and Finance and has an MBA from National University. Upon retirement from the Marine Corps, Marc went into insurance and financial services, worked for major companies, founded two agencies of his own, and held state and federal licenses. He has worked as an agent, a general agent, a managing general agent, a stockbroker åand bond trader. He finished his financial services career as an Agency Business Consultant for one of the most successful District Managers in the history of Farmers Insurance.

Marc spent much of his military career in Asia where he studied martial arts. He attained advanced black belts in Okinawa Kenpo Karate and Kobudo (weapons). He has trained in Aikido, Aiki-Jujitsu, American Kenpo Karate, Shorinryu Karate, Judo and other less well-known styles. He has traveled extensively around the world, founded three martial arts schools in the states, and trained countless Marines on hangar decks, well decks and embassy courtyards in hand-to-hand combat.

Marc spends his retired years writing. He resides in Encinitas, California, with his lovely Japanese wife and muse of many years, Sako.
